Fundraising Tip #34: Host a Fall Fundraising Event in Your Neighborhood!

Your neighborhood is full of people just like you. They work, they have families, they probably know someone who has suffered from cancer. Hosting an event in your neighborhood is a way to bring like-minded people together, all for a common cause. And we have several ways to make it fun!

1. Host a trivia night. Trivia nights are fun and inexpensive. They just require a little time and effort to plan. The steps include:
  • Pick a date and venue that will get the best response.
  • Select interesting categories – about 6 popular ones – and mix the questions so there’s a blend of questions from different categories.
  • Either make up your own questions and answers or purchase them – there are several places you can get high-quality questions. A quick Google search will get you thousands of results.
  • You can raise the money by charging for event tickets: $20 with food and drink coupons or $10 for entry and then sell food and drink separately. It’s up to you how you want to run it.
  • The winner gets half the funds, you and VeloSano would get the other half.
2. Hold a chili cook-off. If there’s one thing humans love more than food, it’s competition. It doesn’t have to be chili; it can be ribs, mac & cheese, or even a pie cook-off. The rules are simple:
  • Cook-off participants pay an entry fee. Make it a smaller fee since these people are already paying for their food.
  • Charge attendees at the door.
  • Winner gets half the proceeds; you and VeloSano gets the other half.
3. Wine pull. For the wine aficionados in your neighborhood, this one is a hit. This fundraising idea can stand on its own or be a great addition to any other event. To do:
  • Participants will purchase “wine pulls” for a set price (say, $15 or $20).
  • They can pull wrapped wine bottles from a selection of expensive, medium and cheap wines.
  • Each participant gets a chance to take home an expensive bottle of wine for an inexpensive entry fee.
  • The best part is that, at the very least, all participants will go home with a bottle of wine, no matter what.
  • Obviously, the gathering of wines is the more difficult part. Check with your local wine store to see if they’ll donate bottles of wine. Or, if you have good neighbors, see if they’re willing to supply a bottle AND play along.
Don’t forget to utilize the many VeloSano downloads we have available to help you promote your event, from flyers to social media covers.

And don’t forget to submit your event to the Upcoming Events page of the website to let other riders and volunteers know about your event!

No matter which fundraising option you choose, the main takeaway to tell your friends is that this is all for a good cause. While they are having a great time learning new trivia, chili taste testing, or winning wine, they are also supporting life-saving cancer research at Cleveland Clinic.
